Guess who’s back? The girl with the killer smile and the golden voice - Dasia. You may remember her for a minor hit, Down Here a few years ago that impressed a lot of dancehall insiders, especially disc jocks. Since that time, Dasia has been working consistently in the music industry as a performer and back-up singer.
She recently returned to Jamaica after a number of overseas engagements where she did backing vocals for reggae star Sugar Minott. In the past, she has toured with Anthony B, opening for him on a North American tour, and she worked with Coco Tea during a tour of Japan recently. She has been a busy little bee but during that time, she carved out enough time to become a mother. Her daughter, Dajanae, is now two years old.
“I am more mature and sensitive now. I have to be, after all, I am a role model for my daughter and I have to walk a path so that she can respect me as her mother,” she said.
One sign of her growing maturity shows up in the social issues that she tackles in her music. One of her recent standout efforts is the wonderfully written Child Molester on the Goodride riddim.
“My daughter was my inspiration for writing this song, especially when I heard about the number of kids being molested and abused. I know what that possibility can do to a mother," she said.
The single has biting lyrics: tears fall from mi eye when mi hear the news/Bout the little infant weh the man abuse/Get scared, no waan send mi child to school/dats why mi dash a fire pon carnal abuse/castrate dem/from dem a paedophile, we no rate dem.
“It has been released overseas and is getting a lot of love. Foreign disc jocks such as Lady D from Atlanta tells me that she loves the song, and she called me for an interview recently,” she said.
Other songs to look out for include Nothing But Love featuring I Octane, and another combination, Rasta the Girls Dem Want featuring Anthony B. She has completed seven tracks in her bid to complete her debut album for Charmax Records, owned by reggae icon Max Romeo. In the meantime, there are plans to re-release Down Here on the Fresh
Ear riddim for deejay-producer Mr. G.
“There’s a disc jock who wants to lick over the riddim and put it back in circulation because he said the song is timeless, and that is something I want to pursue,” she said.
Dasia Lloyd-Williams, better known to her fans as simply Dasia, was born in the parish of St. Catherine Jamaica on January 21, 1981.
Dasia's talents soon became evident when at age 8, she began
performing musical items at church, and performing at community events
in her native Spanish Town.
"It came naturally, I didn't get up one day and say "you know what?"
I'm going to be a singer, I was born to do this,” she said,
confidently.
Dasia attended St Joseph's High School where she teamed up with two
girls to form the trio Da-Na-Te'. The group went on to become
finalists in the Tastee Talent contest but when the contest ended,
they pursued separate paths.
Dasia’s path has seen her blossom into a full-fledged artiste and
recording sensation. Dasia has performed at stage shows such as Sting
2003-04, Reggae in the Hills 2004, East Fest 2004, Bob Marley's 60th
Birth Celebration 2005, His Majesty Coronation Celebration 2005, Black
My Story 2007, Rototom Sunsplash European Festival 2008, Reggae
Sundance 2008, and the One Love Reggae Music Festival..
She is currently managed by popular entertainment personality Chemist
from the Thug Chemist recording label
